Replacement of File Server with Microsoft Cloud Technologies (M365/Azure)

Service description

In the workshop, we will first provide an introduction to modern cloud storage solutions from Microsoft. This includes an overview of OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online, the file structures within Microsoft Teams, as well as Azure Files and Azure File Sync, and their respective use cases.

Subsequently, we will review the existing file server environment – including analysis of folder structures, shares, permission models, storage requirements, and typical usage scenarios within the company.

Building on this, we will examine various migration approaches and strategies, such as a classic lift & shift with Azure File Sync or a structural redesign of data storage in SharePoint and Teams. The consideration of traditional user drives and their potential migration, e.g., to OneDrive for Business, is also an important part of replacing file servers.

A key aspect is the permission and access concept in Microsoft 365 – especially the comparison of traditional NTFS rights with the modern sharing models in SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive, which enable secure and flexible collaboration on shared files.
